Holmes County Jail has contraband problem

Posted: Updated:
LEXINGTON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Holmes County Sheriff's Department has recovered several bags of contraband left behind the jail overnight.

Between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. one of the guards saw a car leaving and thought it was odd that someone would be there so late.

The guard went behind the jail to check out the area and found several basketballs, gym bags and backpacks on the ground. They were all filled with various items including cell phones, tobacco, and marijuana.

Deputies are checking the items for fingerprints but do not have any suspects at this time.

Sheriff March says they're not ruling anything out and will investigate to see if guards could be involved in contraband problem

"Obviously it's something we want to avoid, and making sure guards aren't getting corrupted," March said.

Sheriff March also said they've had a problem a few months back with people throwing contraband over the jail fence.
