New Orleans Saints getting ready for season opener with Atlanta

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WLOX) -

You couldn't ask for a more exciting season opener for the New Orleans Saints.  Yes, those Dirty Birds, invade the Mercedes-Bentz Superdome on Sunday.

Under coach Sean Payton the Saints have enjoyed plenty of success.  The 2013 Atlanta Falcons are the defending NFC South Division Champs but they know New Orleans won't be an easy opponent.

Payton said,"It's an important game because it's the first game.  It is the one in front of us.  Obviously it is a division opponent, we kind of look at it that was, a team in your division, a team that played really well last year and had a fantastics season."

Payton admitted his team has a tough challenge and the Saints will need a good work week to prepare for the Falcons.

This will be Payton's first game back since his year-long suspension.

"We play a lot of games with a lot of hoopla around it, whether it's Sunday's nights, Monday nights, or post season games," Payton stated.  He added,"It's still about protecting the football.  it's still about blocking and tackling. It's about the things that we have control over."

When the Saints open the 2013 season on Sunday, 12 players will be getting their first taste of playing in an NFL game.

Payton said,"I don't think we pay much attention to that really.  We look closely at how they are going to fit into the game plan, how they are going to play in the kicking game and the progress they have made in their position group."

The odds makers have tabbed the Saints a 3 1/2 point favorite over Atlanta.
