Leavenworth man's tweets earn him big honor at Kauffman Stadium

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A Kansas National Guard member gets to throw out the first pitch at the Kansas City Royals game Tuesday night.

Second Lt. George Weston, of Leavenworth, was selected because he couldn't stop tweeting about them.

If you head to Weston's Twitter account, visitors will see more than 3,800 tweets - many of them are about the Royals.

He decided to put all those tweets to good use, and now they will pay off for him.

"It has been a dream of mine to even step on Kauffman field, and now I'm going to be stepping onto the mound at Kauffman to throw out the pitch for my favorite team," Weston said.

The longtime Royals fan has joined the crowds of supporters since he could walk and cheered them on, win or lose.

"I thought it was going to be a joke that I won this contest," he said.

The contest is through the Royals Rewards program where fans get points for interacting online at Royals.com and on the Royals official Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts.

"You get these points, the points turn into tokens," Weston said.

And the tokens earn fans prizes.

"I, of course, threw all my tokens into the first pitch," he said.

Those tokens earned him that pitch and an experience of a lifetime.

"Hopefully I don't get too excited and throw a pitch like Carly Rae Jepsen," Weston said.

The pop singer's pitch went viral as the "worst ever."  Jepsen laughed it off on the field and on Twitter.

Those are tweets Weston wants to avoid.

"That is my ultimate goal ... Just to get the ball to the catcher," he said.

Weston got to choose his catcher, who by the way will be his brother.
