Trial to begin for Springfield man in RI killing outside bank

Posted: Updated:

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Jury selection is scheduled to begin Wednesday in the trial of 1 of 3 people charged in the 2010 killing of a Woonsocket gas station manager outside a bank.

Jose A. Santiago has pleaded not guilty to charges of robbery, conspiracy and using a firearm in a crime of violence in the death of David Main. Authorities say he was the getaway driver.

The case drew national attention when suspect Jason Pleau (ploo) was deemed eligible for the death penalty and became the subject of a battle over capital punishment between Gov. Lincoln Chafee (CHAY'-fee) and the federal government.

In July, Pleau agreed to plead guilty to avoid the death penalty.

The third person charged, Kelly Lajoie, has pleaded guilty.

Santiago is from the Springfield, Mass., area.
