Man confesses to WLBT for Jackson murder before turning himself in

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

One man is dead and another is in critical condition after shots were fired at the Camelot Apartment Complex in west Jackson Saturday morning.

In an unexpected turn of events, a Jackson man who says he's responsible for the shooting spoke exclusively to WLBT before turning himself into police.

Jackson police say they have now charged 21 year-old Michael Fields with capital murder.

Fields confessed to the homicide to WLBT and turned himself in around 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon to precinct one police. He says he shot his victim out of self-defense. Before being charged, Fields asked WLBT not reveal his name. WLBT only revealed Fields' identity once he was formally charged by police.

Surrounded by family and friends outside of Jackson Police Department's Precinct One, Fields said everything started on Friday night when he was almost robbed at gunpoint outside of his Camelot Apartment home.

"They tried to rob me and I shot at them last night and I called police and the police didn't come," recalled Fields.

He says he saw the two alleged attempted armed robbers outside of his apartment again on Saturday morning.

"This morning I came back out again where I live they were waiting on me so when I came out they still out there, they tried at me again," added Fields.

And that's when Fields started shooting, he says to save his life.

"It's self-defense, self defense," said Fields.

"I feel sorry for the family and that this has to take place in Jackson, but my son had to defend himself and I'm here with him 100%," said Fields' mother.

Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham Stewart says the deceased victim is an unidentified African-American man probably in his late teens to mid-20's. He was shot in the buttocks, groin, back and chest.

An innocent bystander was also shot in the apartment complex.

"He was shot in the chest area, his condition is non-life threatening," said JPD Officer Colendula Green.

Police said they are also looking for another suspect, but the man being questioned says he acted alone.

WLBT's Jewell Hillery asked Fields, "Was it just you shooting or with someone else?"

Fields responded, "Wasn't nobody else shooting."

The 21 year-old says he didn't know the men who allegedly attempted to rob him at gunpoint.
