Baby expected to survive crash that killed driver

PASS CHRISTIAN, MS (WLOX) - A horrific car-train accident in Pass Christian Friday afternoon left one person dead and sent a one-year-old infant to the hospital.

Police said the driver of a white SUV died when the vehicle was struck by a train at the Heirn Avenue railroad crossing. The vehicle was dragged more than a block down the tracks and rolled over more than four times before coming to a stop near the Clark Avenue crossing.

Authorities said, fortunately, the infant was strapped in a car seat and is expected to survive the crash.

"The train's got a lot of power behind it," Officer Mickey Moran explained. "I've talked to the conductor and it's very hard to stop these trains, so people need to be alert and aware of these crossings."

The Heirn Avenue crossing has no electronic stopping devices, only stop signs.

The name of the driver won't be released until her relatives have been notified.
