HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Work is proceeding on restoration of one of Southern Miss' most historic buildings which suffered heavy damage in the Feb. 10 tornado. Reconstruction began about three weeks ago on the Ogletree House, which is the headquarters of the USM Alumni Association.

Much of the century-old, front half of the building was lost in the storm, but an expansion built in 2009 was largely untouched.

Alumni association staff which had been displaced because of the tornado will begin relocating to the expansion over the next several weeks.

"We hope to start the process of moving back in late next week," said Jerry DeFatta, executive director of the Southern Miss Alumni Association. "It'll probably take us a couple of weeks to move our things back in to that part of the facility. And we hope to be able to serve our alumni from that portion of the space until the building is restored," he said.

DeFatta also said restoration should be finished in about a year. It could cost more than $2 million, but he said insurance is paying for it.
