FLOWOOD, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The widening of Flowood Drive to five lanes, for and additional four miles, has been in the planning stages for more than five years. But now they are doing some work you can actually see.

The T. L. Wallace Construction Company of Columbia, Mississippi, has started taking down large trees on the project which would widen Flowood Drive to five lanes from the Nucor Steel Plant all the way to Airport Road.

This is a project being handled by the Mississippi Department of Transportation and will be big help in getting people from the developed areas of Rankin County into Jackson.

"There will be monthly meetings with the contractor, progress meetings, talk about safety issues, just to make sure that the motoring public can travel safe, through here," said Flowood Public Works Director Gary Miller.

It will be up to the construction company to maintain two lane traffic on Flowood Drive during the construction.

"But it's going to be at a slower pace," said Miller. "You will still be able to have the two lanes you have got today, but you are not going to be able to drive that 45 miles an hour, that you were used to."

It's a major project for Rankin County having two major arteries blocked at the same time. Old Fannin Road is being widened to five lanes, and that's going to take another year.

The Flowood Drive project will be complete in June of 2015.
