WLOX Editorial: It's time to get rid of eyesores

We were glad to see the confidence displayed in the Gulf Coast economy with plans for building new hotels. Island View in Gulfport will soon begin construction of a 400 room, $50 million expansion. Another 50 to 60 million dollar expansion including a hotel is in the works for Margaritaville in Biloxi.

While these plans are moving forward, we are still frustrated to see little to no movement on some big eyesores in Biloxi. Five years ago construction was halted on what was the Margaritaville site across from the Grand on Highway 90. Now the frame of what was to be Margaritaville including the old Casino Magic hotel remains a high profile eyesore.

Last week, the city of Biloxi sent a letter to Caesar's Entertainment demanding to know the plans for the property. A similar letter went to the Biloxi Catholic Diocese owners of the Santa Maria Del Mar Apartments abandoned since Katrina. We hope the city of Biloxi will do much more than write letters. It's time to get rid of the eyesores on this prime real estate in Biloxi.

That's our opinion, we would like to hear yours. Email your thoughts to editorials@wlox.com, or post your comments below.
