Storm uproots 50-ft.-tall trees in Litchfield Park

LITCHFIELD PARK, AZ (CBS5) -

Storm damage in the West Valley was isolated Monday night. But a neighborhood near Dysart and Glendale was hit pretty hard.

Strong winds uprooted two 50-foot China berry trees in Doug Coupland's front yard in a community near Dysart and Glendale roads.

Neighbors said the storm came through about 7:30 p.m.

Witnesses said the storm only lasted about 15 minutes, but that entire time the winds were whipping and rain was coming down in buckets. That's when the power went out.

"It sounded like a tornado when it hit. I went out and looked. It was real bad, and then I heard 'wham, bam' and stuff breaking. When I looked out the door and I saw sky, I said, 'No, I'm not supposed to see sky. My trees are supposed to be blocking the way,'" said Coupland.

Coupland said he's thankful the trees missed his home and his new car. However, his fence and barbecue grill were crushed.

As Ja-Naya Thompson's short life was celebrated, there were a lot of tears and hugs as hundreds of people paid their respects during the visitation and the funeral service. People told me they went to Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church for two reasons, to mourn the loss of five year old Ja-Naya and to show support to the parents who must now face life without their beloved child.More >>
