Phoenix PD: Alleged shooter knocks on door, leaves man dead

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Police said a Phoenix man was shot dead after getting a knock at the door Sunday afternoon. Some of the only witnesses were kids.

"Every day, something is happening. A couple (of) days ago, somebody got shot in the shoulder. It's just crazy out here," said Graybriar apartment resident Stephanie Gutierrez.

Gutierrez said her daughters were playing on the complex's basketball court when they saw the alleged shooter run by.

"He just took off running that way past the basketball courts. That's when I came out and told the girls to get inside. He was wearing a dark shirt. He had blood on his head," said Gutierrez.

Investigators said around 3 p.m., the suspect knocked on the door of a first-floor apartment. The victim opened it. The man, in his mid-20s, was shot several times, police said.

Sunday's shooting was the last straw for Gutierrez.

"We're scared, and we want to move," she said. "They don't care where they're shooting. There are kids all over the place, you know. All these kids are always out here playing. And you never know, one of them could get shot one day, all over nothing."

Police have detained one person. Investigators said they are not sure if the person is connected to the shooting.
