GREENWOOD, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Mississippi Valley State University is housing more than 100 upperclassmen in two off-campus hotels because of an on-campus room shortage.

It's the second state university to lease rooms for students. Earlier this month, Jackson State leased the 120-room Travelodge motel for nine months.

Acting president Alfred Rankins Jr. says Mississippi Valley has to rent because structural problems closed a dormitory. A news release says shuttles will carry students between the Three Rivers Inn & Suites and the Rodeway Inn in Greenwood and the campus in Itta Bena. Students will eat in the university dining hall.

MVSU did not say how much it is paying. Jackson State is paying more than $800,000 to rent the Travelodge.
