Ft. Campbell soldier cleared of stalking

CLARKSVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A Fort Campbell officer has been cleared of charges that he stalked his wife and violated an order of protection. The charges against Lt. Col. Darin Haas drew extra attention because at the time he headed a sexual assault prevention initiative at the post.

Haas said he's anxious to put the charges behind him and get on with his life.

"I was elated. I felt like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders," Haas said.

Haas admitted he sent text messages to his ex-wife but denies he stalked her or intended to harm her.

"I proceeded to drink way too much and sent text messages that I'm not very proud of," he said. "I'm not making any excuses, because it was poor behavior on my part."

Fort Campbell removed Haas from his job as the leader of its SHARP Program, which is intended to fight sexual harassment and assault.

It's a job he doesn't plan to try to get back; he's retiring from the military at the end of the year.

He said he knows that getting a job in the sexual assault prevention field will be a challenge.

"I love Google but you don't see anything good about me in Google right now," Haas said.

Haas said with the criminal charges behind him, he's ready clear his name, move on, and get remarried.

"I'm just looking forward to starting the next chapter of my life without having to look over my shoulder every second. I mean, it was worse than being in Afghanistan," he said.

The charges of stalking and violating an order of protection will not be prosecuted. The assistant district attorney in charge of the case was not available for comment.
