Tunnel repairs to close I-10 in Phoenix overnight

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Drivers with plans to use westbound Interstate 10 in the area between Sky Harbor Airport and the Deck Park Tunnel are being asked to plan ahead for mostly-nighttime closures this weekend, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

Crews will start work to repair a wall inside the westbound tunnel that was damaged after being hit by a truck involved in a crash last month.

Westbound I-10 is scheduled to be closed between the I-17 "Split" interchange near Sky Harbor Airport and Seventh Avenue north of downtown Phoenix from 9 p.m. Friday to 9 a.m. Saturday and from 9 p.m. Saturday to 9 a.m. Sunday.

Traffic on westbound I-10 will be detoured to northbound I-17. Drivers can reconnect with I-10 at the "Stack" interchange north of Van Buren Street.

Repairs to the damaged section of wall inside the tunnel will take place in stages and are expected to be completed next month. Drivers can expect additional weekend closures after the Labor Day holiday.

As Ja-Naya Thompson's short life was celebrated, there were a lot of tears and hugs as hundreds of people paid their respects during the visitation and the funeral service. People told me they went to Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church for two reasons, to mourn the loss of five year old Ja-Naya and to show support to the parents who must now face life without their beloved child.More >>
