Students head to Washington, DC, to record history

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA (CBS46) -

A busload of people headed out from a southwest Atlanta church Thursday night headed for Washington, DC, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the March of Washington and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech. Among the 70 people were 22 college students selected for the trip.

The students were selected by the National Center for Civil and Human Rights. The center paid for the students' trip in exchange for them compiling interviews as part of an oral history of the civil rights movement.

The National Center for Civil and Human Rights is set to open in downtown Atlanta in 2014. A representative also said the interviews will be put online.

The group expects to arrive in Washington, DC, at about noon on Friday. They will attend the march on Saturday. They expect to leave Washington at about 4 p.m. on Saturday and head back to Atlanta.
