JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Students in Jackson Public Schools won't have a spot on a bus if they live within a mile of school, but some exceptions apply.

Faced with questions from board members about the district's policy, The Clarion-Ledger reports Jackson Public Schools administrators clarified which students it transports to school.

In an explanation at Tuesday's regular Jackson School Board meeting, Transportation Director Richard Williams said buses may pick up students who live between eight-tenths of a mile and 1 mile away from school if a hazard, such as a lack of sidewalks, hinders the walk to school.

The questions came after parents of students complained at last month's that students who had previously been able to take the bus were told they had to walk to school or get a ride.
