BAY ST. LOUIS, MS (WLOX) - Bay High head coach Jeff Hopgood had all the pieces in place in 2012 to make a run at the 4A State Championship. Most of those pieces have left, leaving Hopgood with a rebuilding assignment in 2013.
Hopgood said,"We lost 22 starters from last year's team. But we're definitely excited about this year's team, what this team brings to the table. We're young and inexperienced but I think we'll be competitive."
After serving as the Tigers backup quarterback the past three seasons, senior Bennett Favre steps up behind center,ready to pull the trigger.
Favre said,"Running the offense, making sure everybody is in the right spot and just execute."
Dustyn Breckley brings experience to the Bay High offensive line and says head coach Jeff Hopgood is making sure his Tigers play up to their potential.
"Coach Hopgood has everybody in place in my opinion and I think we'll be alright this year," Breckley stated.
Larnelle Lewis, a junior running back, is expected to get his share of carries this season.
Senior Nick Prulx is nursing a minor injury, but says he'll be in the starting lineup at linebacker and running back.
Prulx said,"Definitely have to be one of the leaders. Whether its run to the water or something like that. Have to be a leader with anything. Pickup practice, anything."
Kicking specialist Patrick Ponder returns after connecting on 16 of 17 field goals last season. He's also an outstanding punter. Ponder has set some high goals for his senior season.
"I want to hit a 60-yarder in a game and trying to get all-state for punting," stated Ponder.
Defensively, Skylar Bush has displayed an ability to become a dominating player... along with Corey Tomasich. Chase Barbay comes from good stock. His dad, Roland, was a standout defensive linemen at LSU in the mid to late 1980's.
Bay High battles Biloxi in the Shrimp Bowl Friday evening at 5 at Gulfport's Milner Stadium. Pearl River Central and Gulfport meet in the second Shrimp Bowl game Friday night around 7:45.
