Motorcycle club hosts school supply giveaway

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A motorcycle club hosted a school supply giveaway Sunday hoping to encourage students and parents after weeks of recent violence.

"We pray that you will be a protective covering over them," said a participate of the event.

A community prayer for protection was a part of the back to school block party and give away at Battlefield Park Sunday afternoon. S.W.A.T., which stands for Sisters with a Throttle Motorcycle Club held the event.

There was face painting, food and fun. Allstate Insurance and Mississippi Motosteps provided the 125 back packs filled with items needed to start off the school year.

"It means a lot as far as youth empowerment and having the community involved because crime is way out of hand right now," said Melinda Casey, who supports the bike club S.W.A.T.

"There are some kids who are just discouraged about school because they don't have supplies. They don't have backpacks and we want to empower those kids with the tools they need to be successful because we know if they're successful, chances of them being violent is slim to none," added Keisha Varnell, a member of S.W.A.T.

This is the third year the bikers have held the school supply give away.
