JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

We watched and waited along with Darius Brent's family for any news about the young man.

His life came to a tragic end a few weeks ago. Saturday the Jackson man was laid to rest, but his spirit lives on in those whose lives he touched.

When Gary Gusick made the decision become a Big Brother in Jackson's Big Brother, Big Sisters Program he had no idea the impact it would have on his life. There he met a then, 11-year-old Darius Brent.

"He was a very lovable, enduring and special kid", Gusick said.

While taking Brent on fun trips around town, Gusick quickly realized the boy's artistic talent. The Jackson man helped Brent get an art scholarship but their relationship soon faded.

"He didn't need some old guy around him all the time. He was more into his peer group and was probably more into girls at that time. They never really connected, until Brent's death.

The 20-year-old was found under an abandoned house last month. His killer is still on the run.

After hearing of Brent's death, Gusick quickly contacted Brent's mother. Saturday afternoon he spoke at his little brother's funeral.

"It meant a lot. It meant those people around him saw me as an important person in his life and somebody that made a contribution to what he was doing," Gusick added.

Gusick, the novelist, says he received the real blessing from his short relationship with the young man he found out was an aspiring rap artists.

"I don't think you judge a person always under the circumstances that they die, cause we usually don't get to pick those, but judge him on the circumstances of his life. And he was a young man with tremendous potential and was really just beginning to show that potential," Gusick explained.

Now, the Jackson author encourages anyone who can to participate in Big Brothers, Big Sisters.

"I  think when God or fate or however you want to put it, places you in a role to reach out to someone you should do it, because you're gonna be the benefactor in the long run. It certainly made a big difference in my life. Obviously, I think it made a difference in his life too," Gusick added.
