JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Mississippi lawmen are blanketing the roadways for the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign that kicked off Friday.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol is targeting drunk drivers. Starting Friday through the Labor Day holiday, troopers intend to keep the highways as safe as possible with a high-profile, high-visibility crackdown on drunk drivers.

This means troopers will be out in force along with other state and local counterparts from all over Mississippi.

The message was driven home by the mother of a 19-year-old who was killed in an alcohol-related crash. Etoile Patrick not only lost her son, but his girlfriend as well in 2007.

"The drunk driver survived, but my son and his girlfriend were killed instantly. But his car blew up. His car was in flames. He lived and I'm not mad at him for living, I'm not mad at him for being alive, but I hope he lives long enough now so he can spread the message: 'I shouldn't have been driving and ruined peoples live,'" Patrick said.

During last year's Labor Day holiday weekend, 34 people died in car crashes, 11 were alcohol related fatalities
