D'IBERVILLE, MS (WLOX) - Construction workers are busy digging up the side of the roadway in order to lay asphalt. Soon Sangani Boulevard will go from three lanes to five.
"It's going to make it more accessible and much safer," D'Iberville City Manager Bobby Eleuterius said. "That's the thing we still have certain times of the day backing up."
Once the construction is complete, drivers will have two lanes each way and a turn lane. The extra lanes will go from the foot of the crossover in front of Wendy's to Lamey Bridge Road.
"Some of them were afraid to go to Lowe's because they couldn't get in and out," Eleuterius said. "So that's going to make it much easier and better for all the other merchants along the corridor."
All the drivers we talked with agreed once the construction is complete, it will be better for everyone.
"It's going to make the flow of traffic go a lot quicker, less hold up here," Toby Bennett said.
"It should bring a lot more people, subdivisions and better for D'Iberville all together," Brandon Harty said.
The $2.2 million widening project is expected to be complete just in time for the Christmas shopping season. But even then, the road work will not be finished.
"We are going to have off ramps for the new shopping center off I-10. We are hoping to work to the west at 67 and Cedar Lake and put a frontage road in from Biloxi," Eleuterius said.
City leaders say in the next few weeks they will be announcing another big development in addition to The Gulf Coast Galleria mall.
