OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) - A new exhibition at the Walter Anderson Museum of Art turns the spotlight on people. Anderson sketched and painted people he knew and loved, like his wife Sissy as well as perfect strangers at work or at play.
"He watched the people in his life and he went down to the harbor to watch people fishing. He would hide where people did not know he was watching and would do sketches" said Director of Exhibitions Douglas Myatt.
The exhibit is titled Painting People. Myatt says the museum is giving visitors a look at rare pieces from the huge collection of Walter Anderson's work.
"Most have never been on display. I've been looking at his work for years and I'm still finding paintings I've never seen," Myatt said.
If you have not been to the Walter Anderson Museum in the past few months, you should put a trip on your schedule. They've completed an expansion and created a fantastic new front lobby. They've also opened two new galleries featuring skylights that add drama to Walter Anderson's art.
The new galleries were formally interior courtyards. They were closed in as part of the expansion. The exhibit Painting People, lets you view the world from Walter Anderson's perspective.
"You are looking through his eyes at people. It makes it very special" said Myatt.
