(RNN) - Space X, the ubercool California company that makes amazing rockets and aircraft, launched a prototype of the world's first reusable rocket on Aug. 13 that took off, maneuvered sideways, hovered for a moment and then returned to land safely on the launch pad.

The video is mind-boggling.

The founder of Space X, Elon Musk, is the mastermind behind the rocket, called Grasshopper. It's 10 stories high, and unlike other rockets is designed to be reusable rather than burning up in the atmosphere after delivering a payload into space.

The design takes a lot of fuel, but on the whole, will be less expensive than the use-once-and-throw-away rockets.

During Tuesday's test, Grasshopper flew to an altitude of about 250 feet and deviated about 100 meters from its takeoff trajectory before returning to land square in the middle of the pad.
