Yazoo County Coroner Ricky Shivers says the Yazoo City man killed in a domestic altercation Saturday died from suffocation.
Shivers said his investigation determined Robert Lee Montson, 56, was being held down on the ground with a man and woman on top of him. Another unidentified man reportedly placed Montson in a choke hold until police arrived, Shivers said.
Montson also suffered stab wounds to his shoulder and hand.
Police Chief Eric Snow says Montson kicked in the front door of his sister-in-law's house on Willie Brown Street around 2 a.m. Saturday morning. That's where he discovered his estranged wife with another man, Snow said.
Montson was armed with a knife and an argument ensued. The wife's companion was stabbed and Montson was held down until police arrived. Montson was barely breathing and paramedics weren't able to revive him.
Montson's death is being investigated as a homicide.
The unidentified stabbing victim has been released from the hospital after being airlifted to University of Mississippi Medical Center.
Neighbors say they never had any trouble out of the men and were shocked something so violent could happen on their quiet street, where everyone is like family.
"Having been here for nearly 50 years, never could have imagined something of that nature occurring. Like I said, nobody really knows the details, and to me the details in itself is insignificant. It's just that it's a healing time for everybody," said neighborhood resident Arthur Young.
