Georgia man charged with dog fighting after stop in Gautier

GAUTIER, MS (WLOX) - A traffic stop in Gautier ended with a man charged with several counts of dog fighting.

Officials with the South Mississippi Metro Enforcement Team said Joseph Bates of Georgia was pulled over Thursday on I-10 during a traffic stop.

Investigators told WLOX News Bates had pit bulls and other breeds of dogs in cages in his truck bed. Many of the dogs had wounds and one was severely injured with bite wounds on its face, neck and legs.

Investigators said Bates also had dog fighting paraphernalia with him.

The dogs were taken to the county animal shelter; Bates was taken to jail where he was being held on a $362,000 bond. He's charged with seven counts of dog fighting, nine counts of animal cruelty and nine counts of failing to provide rabies shot records for the dogs.
