TRAFFIC ALERT: West Street closure

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The City of Jackson announced Wednesday a section of West Street from Woodrow Wilson Avenue to Stadium Drive will be completely closed Thursday morning.

The closure will start at 9 a.m. and is expected to last until Jackson State University's first home football game on Sept. 7.

Currently one southbound lane is open and both northbound lanes are closed.

Crews will be working on a previously scheduled drainage project and repairing subsurface damage to West Street caused by a water main break in June.

West Street southbound from Woodrow Wilson Ave. to Millsaps is already closed due to construction.

The resulting detours are as follows:

-- West St Southbound: Detour begins on Mitchell Ave, heads west to Mill Street, turns south on Mill Street to Fortification Street, then heads east on Fortification back to West Street.

--- West St Northbound: Detour begins on Woodrow Wilson Ave, heads west to the Mill Street exit, turns north on Mill Street to Mitchell Avenue, then heads east on Mitchell Avenue back to West Street

--- Local Traffic: West Street between Mitchell Avenue and Stadium Drive will remain open for local traffic use.

-- Woodrow Wilson Avenue: Motorists on Woodrow Wilson Ave are prohibited from making any left or u-turns at the West Street signal.
