New Orleans Saints Update: Wide receiver Joe Morgan status & new receivers

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WLOX) -

New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton announced today that the team waived kicker Jose Maltos and signed wide receiver Steve Breaston.

He said, "We also waived receiver Chris Givens and signed wide receiver Brent Leonard. We got a couple of guys back in Ray Shipman, Marques Colston and Jarred Fayson."

Patrick Robinson received some limited work on Monday along with quarterback Seneca Wallace while veteran linebacker Jonathan Vilma sat out the practice.

The Saints will don the pads and go at it again in the morning on the outdoor practice fields.

So what is the latest on wide receiver Joe Morgan?

He was injured during Saturday's Black & Gold Scrimmage. Payton said,"We're waiting on Joe right now to give announcement.  We'll see where he's at. He's getting a second opinion right now on his knee."

It sounds like Morgan could be out for some a long period of time and that's why the Saints inked receivers Steve Breaston and Brent Leonard.

Coach Payton said the defense is making progress.

"There's a lot of stuff going on and I think you see earlier in the camp that their minds are churning picking it up.  They have been tough.  There are some unique challenges on our defense right now and that's good for us and that's good to see."

The Saints open the preseason Friday night in the Superdome hosting the Kansas City Chiefs.

Over the tenure of his athletic career, Picasso Nelson Jr. had been many things, including a member of a state championship football team at Oak Grove High School; starting fixture in the University of Southern Mississippi defensive backfield; multi-selection to Conference USA All-Academic team. What he never had been was a long-term spectator, forced to watch from the sidelines because of injury.
