11-year-old boy leads mass as parish organist

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - An opening hymn began mass at Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos Parish in Biloxi Sunday morning. In front of the congregation were some small hands behind the big notes.

"You almost can't see him when he's sitting behind the organ," said Father Steve Wilson about the 11-year-old parish organist Kevin Tran. "He's been a real boom to the parish."

Father Steve said when the church organist moved away last year, they thought they'd give Tran a chance to fill the sanctuary with music.

"When I was little, about 8, my mom bought me a small electric piano and it started lighting up lights," said Tran. "So I started playing it."

He can't reach all the pedals, but he's about to celebrate his one-year anniversary as parish organist.

"I love him. He's so sweet and very talented," said parish cantor Maryanne Kisner.

"I think it's wonderful to come in and see a young person using his gift that God's given him," said a member of the congregation Valerie Johnson.

Tran is about to be in the 6th grade at Biloxi Junior High School and not only does he shine as an organist, but the straight A student has big plans for his future.

"When I grow up, I want to be a dentist and this is like my back-up to make extra money," said Tran.

But for now, you'll find him behind the organ every Sunday at 9 a.m.

"I'm so proud for my son to play the organ," said Tran's mother Hue Nguyen.

"I love how he plays and when his feet reach the pedal, I'm sure he'll be fantastic," said Father Steve Wilson.
