Gulfport couple married 73 years says pancakes are the key to lasting love

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

When Woodrow Wilson was president, Robert and Doris Moody were born in Gulfport. When President Calvin Coolidge was in office, the Moodys met in the halls of Westside Elementary School.

On November 19, 1940 the daily newspaper cost just 3 cents and Doris said, 'I do' to Robert Moody.

Fast Forward 73 years and the Moodys are still happily married. They have two children, three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild on the way.

"Life is so good to us, we just enjoyed every minute of it," said Doris. "Can't imagine being apart."

Doris will be 94-years-old next month. Bob said he's going on 95-years-young. When the two got married, Doris knew the key to keeping her man happy.

"Bob has always wanted to have pancakes for breakfast and so that was one of the first things I learned how to cook when I got married was pancakes," said Doris.

73 years later, Robert, known as 'Bob,' still has pancakes every morning for breakfast. The couple has been through a lot together, owning one of the first motels on the Coast, Moody's Motel and Cottages.

Their relationship has quite literally weathered the storms. But, they've always called Gulfport home.

"Hurricane Camille, we had about 8 feet of water in our house," said Doris.

When Katrina hit, Doris went to Texas. Bob stayed home in Gulfport. For a day, Doris thought she lost her honey.

"Somebody knocked on our door and said, 'I've got Bob Moody out here.' And I thought, 'Oh my goodness, they've got him on a stretcher.' But no, he walked in with a crutch," said Doris.

"We've had such an interesting life, when Buzzy Lang was mayor of Gulfport, he appointed Bob harbor master," said Doris.

They've had an active life, one that now moves a little slower.

"By the time we get up and have breakfast, it's almost noontime," said Doris. "Then, first thing you know the 4 O'Clock News comes on TV and we don't want to miss that."

They don't leave their apartment without help, but as long as they're together they're happy. And the key to that happiness, they say, is love and some really good pancakes.
