Section of Fortification Street project stalled

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Work has come to a standstill on one section of the multimillion dollar Fortification Street project in Jackson.

Contractors say they've found a giant hole with a massive, original water and sewer line in the middle that has crumbled into pieces. They say it will cost another $100,000 to fix.

However, two Jackson City Council members -- LaRita Stokes and De'Keither Stamps -- say they won't approve the change order.

Mayor Chokwe Lumumba has urged them to vote in favor of it.

"They need to say yes. I'm tired of riding on those bumpy roads. Gotta drive two miles per hour coming down there. It's slowing business and it's slow and bumpy yes," said Milo Perry, who works at a Barber shop just up the street.

For now, this part of the project is on hold. The full council may take the matter up next week.
