JEFFERSON COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A man and woman are behind bars after the Jefferson County sheriff says they attempted to smuggle contraband into the jail.

Sheriff Peter Walker says Kathy Ann Boatman, 31, and Christopher Ray Martin, 36, have been charged with conspiracy to commit a crime.

Walker says Boatman and Martin were found inside a vehicle on jail grounds around 1 a.m. Friday. A correctional officer notified a deputy that it seemed suspicious for them to be parked outside the facility, and he had a felling that a "drop" was about to be made.

A deputy searched the perimeter and uncovered contraband including cell phones, cigarette lighters and tobacco.

The sheriff says Boatman admitted that she and Martin were on the property to smuggle the contraband.

Boatman and Martin are being held in the jail while they await their initial court appearance.
