GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Harrison County Sheriff Melvin Brisolara says deputies captured Maxwell Phillips in the woods adjacent to the county jail. Deputies arrested the Gulfport man about two hours after he reportedly walked away from a house arrest office on the jail grounds.
Investigators said Phillips was about to be handcuffed and locked up for allegedly violating his house arrest guidelines.
The sheriff said Phillips was on house arrest because of a variety of misdemeanor traffic violations. When he was recently charged with DUI, he reportedly violated the terms of house arrest. Consequently, when he showed up at Harrison County's house arrest unit today, he was supposed to be arrested and taken to jail.
But, just as handcuffs were to be placed on Phillips, the sheriff said he ran off and disappeared near the sewage plant adjacent to the Seaway Road jail. Harrison County deputies and Gulfport Police spent the noon hour searching for Phillips. Three K-9 units in the woods next to the jail ultimately tracked down the walk off suspect.
