Coast business owner believes in Mississippi's workforce quality

D'IBERVILLE, MS (WLOX) -

Since Governor Phil Bryant has been in office, job creation and economic success have been some of his main goals. The aggressive push for job creation has helped to establish more than 7,200 jobs and more than $1 billion in private sector investment in our state.

Governor Bryant believes in the Mississippi workforce and new businesses feel that confidence.  John Lockett, owner of Dickey's Barbeque Pit in D'Iberville, feels a quality workforce dwells within the Magnolia state.

The new BBQ restaurant is tucked in the corner of the Promenade Shopping Center, but walk inside Dickey's Barbeque Pit and pork and smiles are plentiful. The restaurant opened at the beginning of July. It's a tasty investment in Lockett's dream.

He's retired Air Force and said deciding to bring the barbeque pit to Coast was partially conceived as a way to help the local economy.

"Small business is the backbone of our community," said Lockett. "We need to keep supporting our small business owners so they can continue to produce jobs."

A true testament to that job creation can be found in Richard Mosher, the man who prepares the plentiful plates.

"I believe it's well worth it, with people like John and their attitude and people they're willing to hire and work with that are really good people and good people to work with and for," said Mosher.

That quality work environment helps creates happy costumers.

"These people here are incredibly nice," said costumer Bob Strickland. "They're very friendly and they help you out in every way that they can."

"The owners come up and talk to us and introduce themselves and really wanted to know our opinion," said Terri Wescovich. "And it is just really good and we really recommend it."

Those satisfied customers and happy employees are what Lockett feels are the rewards for investing in Mississippi.

"A lot of care goes into what we do here and so we're really excited to be able to provide a great quality workforce, providing a great product and service to our community," said Lockett.

It's an economic development effort that's generating results.
