The 19th annual Carl Legett Memorial Fishing Tournament is slated for this weekend at the Point Cadet Marina in Biloxi. The event, featuring freshwater and saltwater categories, has a guaranteed payout of $25,500 with competitive fishing days on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
A kickoff party is set for Thursday at 5 pm inside the Golden Nugget Casino in Biloxi. All anglers must be registered by Friday at 3:30 pm. Offshore categories include amberjack and cobia with a first place payout of $2,500 and king mackerel and snapper with a first place payout of $1,500.
"Amberjack is set to reopen in federal waters on August 1 so we added that as a category," said tournament spokesman Randall Broussard. "Since red snapper is close in federal waters we will substitute mangrove snapper in its place."
The Inshore Division includes speckled trout with a first place payout of $1,500. Other categories are alligator gar, black drum, blackfish, flounder and redfish and a first place payout of $1,000.
Freshwater categories features green trout (bass) with a top payout of $1,500 and catfish where first place receives $1,000. All divisions award cash to the top three places and the entry fee is $60 per person.
"At the current time we are currently watching the weather very closely to what is happening to what was Tropical Storm Dorian last week," Broussard said. "We are planning on a bigger and better tournament than last year and all the categories will be the same as last year."
"This is by far the largest single entry fishing tournament here on the Coast and the fisherman love it. We have categories for the large boaters, the small boaters - even the wade fishermen. We pride ourselves on catering to anyone that fishes. It's a family oriented weekend."
Scales will be open Friday and Saturday from 4-8 pm. The final day will features scales open from 2-5 p.m.
A Junior Angler's Tournament will be held Saturday from 8:30 -11 am.
