Ariel Castro to make statement at Thursday sentencing

CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

Details are emerging about plans for the Thursday sentencing hearing for Ariel Castro.

A defense attorney tells 19 Action News Reporter Ed Gallek that Castro will make a statement.

Castro has already agreed to a plea deal of life in prison plus 1,000 years, but there will still be a formal sentencing hearing on Thursday.

Castro pleaded guilty last Friday to holding Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight hostage in his home over the course of more than decade, sexually abusing them.

Attorney Craig Weintraub says he plans to make a short statement and Castro plans to make a short statement, too.

What will Castro say? Weintraub says it's nothing pre-planned, so there is no way to predict.

Gallek is still waiting to hear back from Cuyahoga County Prosecutors for definitive word on whether any of the victims will speak. Investigators plan to have an evidentiary hearing before the sentencing, and at that time, they are going to present much of the evidence from the case.

One reason for that is to put it all on the record. As part of the plea deal, Castro has agreed not to appeal, but investigators are leaving nothing to chance in case the case would ever come up again.
