Some state income tax returns still not processed

Posted: Updated:
CLINTON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

July 15th has come and gone and some Mississippians are still waiting for their state income tax return checks. The good news, according to spokesperson Kathy Waterbury, is that about 98-percent of the returns have been processed.

A big factor in the slowed down process, says Waterbury, is validation verification; extra precautions to prevent fraud.

But Waterbury says the agency is also short about 100 workers from 10-years ago.

"We have been underfunded for our personnel for several years, just like other state agencies," said Waterbury. "You have known since 2008 when we went through all the budget cuts and we have not been able to build back up. The legislature this last session did authorize us some new positions and we are trying to hire those now, but those didn't come until July 1. Hopefully we'll have trained staff next year at this time."

State law requires the department to add interest on any refunds paid after July 15.
