Not all welcome gun maker to Ridgeland

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A gun manufacturer is on the way to Mississippi and there are some who say despite state lawmakers' welcome to the company, not everyone is celebrating the business.

A protest against the company is expected to take place Monday at noon.

State lawmakers accomplished their goal of luring a gun maker to Mississippi but not everyone is happy to see them here.

Hinds County Supervisor Kenneth Stokes plans to protest the arrival of Talon Ordnance. He says a peaceful picket will be held outside the Governor's Mansion at 12 p.m.

"Blood money from guns is similar to blood money from dope dealers. They destroy lives and we don't need blood money in Mississippi. Yes, we need jobs but not that badly that we are going to let them bring more guns and have more babies being killed," says Supervisor Stokes.

Friday, Governor Phil Bryant announced Talon's plans to build a manufacturing facility in Ridgeland. Talon builds various models of rifles, pistols, shotguns, and suppressors.

Stokes and the mother of murder victim Rodrick Harris, killed June 3, believes the guns made by Talon will end up on the streets of Jackson, creating more violence. They, along with other protesters, have a message for Gov. Bryant.

"Take time out and look at all the senseless killings. Take time out to go to some of these victim's parent's houses and sit down and talk with them," expressed Latrinia Harris, whose son was killed June 3.

Talon plans to produce at least 3,000 rifles and employ 10 people.

The company CEO Clay Baldwin responded to questions about assault rifles in the hands of consumers Friday saying, "Responsible firearm ownership is certainly a freedom we maintain in this country, were devoted as a company to encourage and promote the safe use, and lawful use of this product."

"Linking guns to be produced by Talon Ordnance with illegal gun violence is the same as linking vehicles produced at the Nissan plant with drunk driving. Both assertions are absurd. As previously stated, Talon advocates the safe, responsible, lawful use of firearms," says Baldwin.
