8 injured after row house collapse in Philly

(RNN) - At least eight injuries have been reported in South Philadelphia after a row house collapsed Monday morning, according to CNN.

It appears at least one row house collapsed and neighboring homes have partially collapsed.

Fire officials said the home that collapsed was being renovated and collapsed due to a water heater explosion.

The explosion happened around 11 a.m. ET in the 400 block of Daly Street.

According to CNN, a witness told KYW they heard an explosion and smelled gas during the time of the collapse.

According to CBSPhilly, six adults and two children were injured. Six were taken to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital; one was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital and one of the children was taken to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

"They threw this baby out the window because the girl was on fire and the fireman had to catch the baby and all," witness Mike McGraw, Jr. told KYW.

According to Deputy Fire Commissioner Derrick Sawyer, the person initially reported as being trapped inside the home was the contractor working inside during the time of the collapse and is said to be critically injured.

Authorities also said all people have been accounted for.

The extent of the injuries are not known at this time.

"They have to be careful with removing debris, and they have to be careful with secondary collapse," Sawyer said. "Considering three dwellings collapsed and there were no fatalities, we have to be thankful for that."

Twelve residents were evacuated from the scene and were taken to a shelter at Taggart Elementary School.

A demolition site accident caused a building to collapse in Philadelphia in June.

It collapsed onto the Salvation Army Thrift Store that was next door. Six people were killed and 13 more were injured.

    A puppy rescued from an alleged dog fighting ring in Wayne County last month has found a permanent loving home.  Drake, a four-month old male mixed breed, was adopted Saturday.  He had serious wounds when he and eight other dogs were seized from a property on Lacey Road in late January.  They were taken to Southern Cross Animal Rescue in Jones County to be rehabilitated.  Volunteers with SCAR said Drake made steady progress and was ready for a forever home.&nbs...
