Moss Point man drowns near Cedar Creek sandbar

JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - An autopsy has determined 46-year-old Melvin Furniss of Moss Point died late Sunday afternoon after he drowned near a Cedar Creek sandbar.

Details about the death are very limited right now.  Jackson County's coroner tells Furniss was swimming with friends off Highway 63.  At one point, he went underwater, and he didn't resurface.  Furniss was eventually pulled from Cedar Creek.  But, he was pronounced dead at just past 5:00 Sunday afternoon.

Coroner Vicki Broadus says Furniss' death will be ruled an accidental drowning.

We expect more information about this death to be released later this morning.  When it is, we'll update this story on TV and on line.
