Hinds Supervisors to meet to discuss detention center

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Hinds County Board of Supervisors will meet this week to discuss the battered detention center in Raymond.

The meeting comes after a Hinds County Grand Jury requested corrections experts to help it complete a report on the jail.

Circuit Court Judge Tommie Green has given the grand jury more time to complete its report, which could identify problems and make recommendations for improvements. A number of disturbances have occurred after inmates got out of their cells because of faulty locks.

Sheriff Tyrone Lewis says supervisors have toured the facility and begun working toward making repairs.

"It's gone cost us money. If they say a new jail, that's gone cost us money. If they say renovate, that's gone cost money. If they say bring somebody from the outside in, that's gone cost money. Even to get the person to investigate, it's gone cost money, but it's better to spend a little money now than a lot of money later," said Hinds County Supervisor Kenneth Stokes.

The board of supervisors are scheduled to meet Tuesday morning.
