Water advisory issued for Three Mile Creek and Pearl River

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality issued a temporary water contact advisory Saturday for a section of Three Mile Creek and the Pearl River in Jackson.

The advisory is issued due to excessive rainwater and a sewage bypass at a manhole off South Gallatin Street.

The advisory extends on Three Mile Creek from South Gallatin Street and I-20 to the confluence with the Pearl River.

The advisory for the Pearl River begins at the I-20 Bridge and extends to the Swinging River Bridge in Byram.

MDEQ recommends that people avoid water contact recreation such as swimming or wading in these waters.

In addition, people should avoid eating fish from these waters until further notice.

The City of Jackson is working to correct the issues, and MDEQ staff will monitor bacteria levels and water quality and will revise the advisory as needed.
