The Word Center hosts backpack giveaway

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

On Saturday morning The Word Center in Jackson passed out more than 1,000 backpacks filled with school supplies for free. Despite dreary morning weather, a long line and crowd of hundreds of parents and kids started to form for the school supplies three hours before doors opened.

"We actually had people line up at about 7 this morning," said The Word Center's Pastor, Roderick Richardson.

As families waited in line they listened to The Word Center's praise team sing. Shortly after 10 a.m., families walked in to pick up their backpacks.

"It's going to a good start until we get on off in the school year and it's time to re-load up on more supplies," said mom Yolanda Garner.

For parents on a budget, whether they have one child or several, the free backpack and supply giveaway is helping to save hundreds of dollars on classroom essentials.

"It's about $100 per child they have backpacks, uniforms, school supplies it's a lot, so I'm going to see, this is my first time coming to something like this so I'm going to see how it's going to help," said mom Margaret James.

Pastor Richardson said his church is simply humbled to help serve the community.

"There's a great need here, we're just basically scratching the surface of the need here," said Pastor Richardson.

"It makes me feel good to know that people care enough about other people to want to donate their time money and efforts you know to help other people out," said James.

If you missed today's event you can catch another school supply giveaway on Sunday, August  4th. The City of Jackson will host the "Start Strong, End Strong," Back-to-School Celebration and Supply Giveaway. The event will take place at the Metrocenter Mall from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
