State Treasurer Lynn Fitch is warning Mississippians about an email scam that is making the rounds.

Fitch says the email is from a person who claims to be a regional auditor from the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators. The email promises the recipient that they have inherited a large sum of money from a deceased relative.

The National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators confirmed the emails are fraudulent and the auditor, Alexis James, doesn't exist.

Fitch recommends that people contact their state unclaimed property office to verify that any communication regarding unclaimed property is legitimate.

You can contact the Unclaimed Property Division at the Office of the State Treasurer at 601-359-3534.

The NAUPA encourages individuals to report any suspicious unclaimed property communication to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) online.
