HOLMES COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A Holmes County man says he became the victim of highway piracy along Interstate 55 last month.

Thomas McAfee said it took him less than an hour to go get a tow truck after his car broke down -- but when he returned, his white 1998 Firebird worth $17,000 had been stolen from the side of the interstate.

"They travel the highways up and down like sharks waiting to see if someone's car stops," McAfee said. "If they leave it your car is gone. I mean, I couldn't believe it. I was in total shock. I couldn't believe it. We came back around three times just for my own mental state. I couldn't believe something like that would happen to me."

The Holmes County resident of more than 20 years says he immediately contacted the Holmes County Sheriff's Department only to find out he was not the only victim.

"He told me in the past two days there were three cars stolen from the same area, the same way," McAfee said. "Their cars broke down and the pirates got them."

Holmes County Sheriff Willie March says his team has seen several cases of highway piracy in the past several years. He believes this is a money-making trade.

"We think they are taking them and stripping them down," March said. "This one we saw we know it was a strip down. They are taking the motor out, taking the tires off."

"I just want people to be aware of what's going on," added McAfee. "If your car stops, have somebody stay with it until you get some help and someone to get you off the road because this is ridiculous."

Sheriff March says rural areas are the most vulnerable. If you break down, he recommends contacting your local sheriff's department to alert them of the situation.
