PICAYUNE, MS (WLOX) -

Picayune police arrested 69-year-old Jimmie Hathorn after marijuana was allegedly discovered stuffed in an air conditioning unit in his home Monday afternoon.

According to the Assistant to the Picayune Chief of Police Jeremy Magri, the arrest stems from a report of a dispute at Hathorn's home located at the 600 block of Rosen Street in Picayune.

Magri said there were several people at the home when officers arrived. When officers walked inside the home they found a man and woman arguing.

That's when, Magri said, they could smell a strong odor of marijuana.

The officers asked Hathorn if they could search the home and he complied, Magri said.

During their search they reportedly discovered a bag inside the air conditioning unit in the hallway. In that bag were five other bags containing marijuana, Magri explained.

Magri said officers also found a handgun with the serial numbers filed off and a shoe box on the floor containing a black digital scale and sandwich bags.

He said a firearm without a serial number is considered a federal offense.

"Due to Hathorn being the homeowner, he is responsible for what's inside his home," Magri said. "The marijuana is valued at several hundred dollars."

The two people involved in the argument were not arrested; however, Hathorn was arrested and is being held at the Picayune Police Department jail charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute within 1500 feet of a school.

Police are still investigating the firearm found at the home.
