Free books For thousands of children

Posted: Updated:
MADISON COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Thanks to a kick start grant from Nissan, thousands of Mississippi children will get free books every month.

Nissan Motor Company is giving $400,000 to United Way of the Capital area to expand the Dolly Parton Imagination Library Literacy Program. It gives a book each month to children from birth to age 5.

The program will now have enough money to cover 35,000 children in Hinds, Rankin and Madison counties over the next five years. The program is designed to create a home library of up to 60 books for children.

Imagination Library was created by country music legend Dolly Parton and is administered by United Way. Parents are also encouraged to read the books with their children.

Parents will be able to enroll their children for the program at local preschools, day care centers, libraries and community events. United Way of the Capital Area will make further announcements as the expanded program rolls out later this year.

As Ja-Naya Thompson's short life was celebrated, there were a lot of tears and hugs as hundreds of people paid their respects during the visitation and the funeral service.
