JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The woman who shot her sister earlier this week, then attempted suicide, has died. Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham Stewart says Nancy Pace died Tuesday evening of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Jackson police have been investigating the domestic shooting that involved two sisters and say the shooting have been ignited by a case of mental illness.

Jackson police received an unknown trouble call around 1:30 p.m. Monday after neighbors heard gunshots in the 4500 block of Meadowhill Road. When officers arrived on scene, they discovered two women had been shot, one already deceased from the gunshot wound.

The surviving sister was hospitalized after trying to take her own life.

Monday night, investigators released details in the fatal shooting revealing a 60-year-old woman shot and killed her 53-year-old sister.

Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham-Stewart identified the fatal shooting victim as Melinda Pace. Pace was shot one time in the head.

"Both the victim was shot in the head along with the other female. There was also a dog that was killed in the process," said JPD Officer Colendula Green.

Officials say Pace lived in the guest house behind the residence where the shooting took place. Investigators confirm Pace's older sister shot Pace and then turned the gun on herself.

"I stay right behind the house, you know what I'm saying, just like a corner over. It's just like right behind the house where they live. My auntie lives right here next to them so this is the first time this has ever happened over on this side of town," said neighbor Jamal Smith.

Officials state the fatal shooting victim suffered from mental illness.

Residents in the area, who did not want to speak on camera, said neighbors knew Pace was troubled. One resident and member of the neighborhood association said Pace mainly stayed inside her home but had gone to the home of neighbors and shared her problems.
