Mississippi reports 3 new West Nile Virus cases

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Mississippi health officials report 3 new cases of the West NIle Virus in the state this week, bringing the total to 43 human cases, including two deaths.

The three new cases are in Rankin, Lamar and Forrest counties.

So far this year, cases have been reported in:

  • Adams - 1
  • Bolivar - 1
  • Forrest -6
  • Harrison - 1
  • Hinds - 12
  • Jones - 2
  • Lamar - 5
  • Leflore - 2
  • Lincoln - 1
  • Lowndes - 1
  • Madison - 3
  • Marion - 1
  • Pike - 1
  • Rankin - 5
  • Wayne - 1

In 2012, Mississippi had 247 cases of the virus and five deaths.

State health officials say Mississippians should take appropriate precautions to protect themselves from mosquitoes.
