GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - A Gulfport police officer finally caught an alligator that had been roaming local ditches for weeks now. Gulfport Lt. Phillip Kincaid told WLOX News the 3 1/2 foot gator was caught while sunbathing.
He said neighbors alerted police that the gator was in a ditch by 34th Street and 20th Avenue near the UPS building in Gulfport on Wednesday.
"Every time the officers went there in the past the gator would quickly run back to a culvert. This time officers were able to block the entrance into the culvert," Kincaid said.
Kincaid said officer Jerry Birmingham used a catch pole, that's normally used to catch dogs and cats, to nab the gator. Once the 3 1/2 foot gator was captured, Birmingham met up with alligator catcher, Sam Searcy.
"I know at least three or four gators that we have gotten in the past six months," Kincaid said.
Kincaid said Searcy will relocate the gator to a safer place and away from neighborhoods.
