HINDS COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Same sex couples push for marriage in Mississippi and will enter the Hinds County Courthouse Monday morning in attempts to get a marriage license.

"Several gay couples will be requesting a marriage license. These are loving, committed couples living here in the Jackson area and would like very much to be married," explains Reverend Jasmine Beach Ferrara.

The We Do campaign is a push for equality for same sex couples and holds numerous supporters in the Metro area. The couples, who readily recognize they will be denied a marriage license, simply want to bring awareness to the fact that same sex couples are not given the same opportunities as heterosexual couples.

"Because of current laws in Mississippi, the [marriage license] application will be denied," acknowledges Rev. Ferrara, "we know that going into it. The reason we do this is to help draw attention to the reality that gay and lesbian and transgender people live in literally every town across Mississippi and yet do so as second class citizens."

The We Do campaign supporters have participated in marriage license application requests across the state, and say the reason is to engage in conversation and help others in the Magnolia State realize that there is a momentum toward change.

"The couples today will be surrounded by family and friends supporting them and we often get messages of support from across the state. What we're seeing is there is a real momentum growing across the state as more and more people are standing up to call for equality and more allies are standing up to say 'we're right there with you,'" adds Rev. Ferrara.
